Ramp Up Your PowerShell Skills with SMO and the SQL Server Module

Target Audience:

If you are familiar with PowerShell at all and are curious about the SQL Server PowerShell module and SMO. This is a beginner level session.

PowerShell is all the craze. Microsoft has released a new version of the SqlServer PowerShell module and we are going to have some fun with it. The new SqlAssessment cmdlets and the SqlServer provider are very powerful items in your learning PowerShell as a DBA. I will also cover the basics of SMO and how to navigate it so that you get some value out of a command line tool. From Properties and Methods, to access methods, we will bring you up to speed quickly. I will also show you some practical examples that are pretty simple to manage Files, Database Properties, and sp_configure settings. Join me in the Quest to become a PowerShell DBA.

Why I Want to Present This Session:

It is very important to learn PowerShell and become familiar with the tools available. It will help you actually get more done easily and to begin to think about proactivity and productivity as a DBA. PowerShell is that tool in my opinion.

I think PowerShell has moved from craze to “Essential tool for any self-respecting DBA” 🙂 I think you do a good job over covering what will be in your session.

The only recommendation I have is to maybe expound a bit more on why the new module and cmdlets are of interest. Are they faster? More reliable? Enable tasks impossible before? I think a little bit of detail might hook some more potential viewers.
